Tropical Field Studies in Costa Rica

Costa Rica 2018 - ITINERARY (tentative)
MAY 21 to June 1

April/May Orientation & Course work at BHCC prior to leaving for Costa Rica.
Three Sundays 1:00pm – 4:00pm: April 8, April 22, and May 6.

Day 1/May 21: Depart Boston early morning. Arrive in San Jose CR early evening. Overnight near San Jose.

Day 2/May 22: Travel to the Talamancas Mountains (cloud forest ecosystem).
Overnight at Armonia Ambiental (sustainable farm).

Day 3/May 23: Sustainable farming activities. Visit to coffee cooperative. Overnight at Armonia Ambiental.

Day 4/May 24: Late morning travel to Osa Peninsula. Cultural day in village of Sierpe. Overnight in Sierpe.

Day 5/May 25: Early morning boat trip down the Rio Sierpe stopping along the way to kayak through a mangrove forest. Arrive at the Campanario field station in the early afternoon. Orientation to the station and introductory hike into the forest. Overnight at Campanario.

Day 6/May 26: Field research activities. Visit to bat cave. Overnight in Campanario.

Day 7/May 27: Field research activities. Night hike through forest. Overnight in Campanario.

Day 8/May 28: All day hike to Corcovado National Park. Late afternoon free time. Overnight at Campanario.

Day 9/May 29: Service-learning project. Evening discussion of Costa Rican conservation and protected areas. Final night in Campanario.

Day 10/May 30: Leave Campanario via the Rio Sierpe. Catch bus in Sierpe for trip back to San Jose stopping at an animal rescue center to see sloths and other critters. Stop for souvenir purchases. Overnight in San Jose area.

Day 11/May 31: The day will be spent touring places of interest in the San Jose Central Valley area. Additional opportunities to purchase souvenirs. Farewell dinner in San Jose.

Day 12/June 1: Departure back to the USA.
